Topics of Conversation:
President Scott open the meeting at 6PM. Clerk Greg Belcher read minutes of the last meeting and the financial report. We have 27 members. Greg ask for motion to accept the minutes and financial report as read. Al Davis seconded the motion. John Messia from the Mayor's office was unable to attend and Jay DeGrace and Mayor Sullivan were at a graduation. No report from city hall. Councilors were not present. Darren Duarte spokesperson representing the Brockton Police Dept. He told us how he started working in the media industry. He explained how the news gets reported and how they rush to scenes for accident, shootings. They should contact his office first and see if it's a factual event. He gave an example: someone called the media first on a Halloween night (poisoned candy) only to be a fake news story. His office along with 10 department members formed a Quality of Life Committee. Also at attendance was owner of Irving's Hardware David Sena. David spoke about the unhoused not welcome at Father Bill's causing disturbances and littering. Darren mentioned he is working with the problem and the Quality of Life Members to find a solution. Having the Pastor at the church next door who opens his church only some of the times is somewhat the problem. Greg asks if there was still an officer at D.W. Field Park at night. Capt. Hallisey said there is. He also said there were many encampments in the area. Capt. Hallisey also said that the City of Brockton follows State regulation regarding that if a person unhoused/migrant comes to Brockton they must have shelter, and children get education. Many of the hotels have no room for visitors because of this problem. Also mentioned was George's Cafe now having large gatherings for social events approved by Brockton Licensing Board on Weekends for a capacity of 360. Deputy Chief Williams mentioned they are up to code. Capt. Hallisey said if they all go to smoke who is to say they drink outside. These event must be shut down at 9 PM. This will be enforced by the Licensing Board. Also the MBA spoke about Gala being held by South Middle School this Saturday. Deputy Chief Williams mentioned about a Firework task force with State, Local Police and Fire: he said call the hotline 508-941-0244 to report any such activity. Rob May of the Brockton Redevelopment mentioned a phase of working with Montello businesses for what type of businesses we need here. Greg said the closing of Harborone is not a good thing in Montello. Mr. Casey CEO had no interest on talking to the Montello Business Association he was invited several times (no show). Rob May said the fairgrounds is sold to a developer. Its a C2 zone. Old Colony Planning Council along with state funding is involved. Greg said if Brockton High School is in a flood zone why put money into it. David Lynch said the city should buy the land from Bertarelli family and start fresh. Atty. Nessralla mentioned about city owned properties if they were going to be put up for auctions. Rob May said soon. Meeting was adjourned at 7:05 PM.
